Newcomers to Canada

New to Canada? Set up your money in the right order: SIN, bank account, benefits, credit and your first tax return. Our roadmap gives you dates, not just a list.

  1. Apply for benefits early
You can apply for the CGEB (formerly the GST/HST credit) and the Canada child benefit before your first tax return.
  2. Start your credit history
A first credit card, used lightly and paid in full, starts your Canadian credit file.
  3. File your first return
It is due April 30 of the year after you arrive.
